Program:

Wheel throwing - focused program is all about building confidence on the wheel.

Ancient Korean throwing techniques are taught step by step through theory, demonstration, and guided practice.

You will learn how to throw off the hump, and master basic but fundamental shapes. We believe it is essential that students develop an honest relationship with clay, know its limits, and understand that each time we touch the clay, there must be a reason and a method to our movements. By breaking down each step students can sharpen their skills and aspire to a higher level of craftsmanship in their own practice. Imagine all the key lessons one would learn as an apprentice, extracted and condensed into three days of intense practice. Students from all backgrounds and skill levels are welcome. Instruction and demos will be catered to each individual student’s goals and/or abilities while honoring the traditional method of learning.

Learn how to practice and follow the path to mastery on the wheel.

The workshop includes:

-Spiral wedging in the Korean style -Learning the secrets to relaxing and centering large amounts of clay for throwing off the hump (for example centering 5kg at once).

-Systematically breaking down the fundamentals of Korean style wheel throwing techniques passed down from the generations for efficient throwing.

- Practicing the basic “sabal” tea bowl in order to understand the difference between the structure (pilling up in the “V and U “and the shaping phases of making. -Develop a more intuitive approach to clay through the relationship between throwing and trimming.

-Extend these principles to other forms like plates, cylinders, and jars -Many forms will be demonstrated from teapots to narrow necked jars and traditional forms from Korea. Students will be able to request any shape to see made by the master.

Timings: 10:30 am to 5:30pm every day, lunch break at 12:30 for 1 hour served by the studio. Snacks, tea and coffee will be served at all times, for those who wish to have a break.
